Digestive System

Major Organs and Parts:

-Esophagus
-Stomach
-Large/Small Intestines
-Liver
-Mouth
-Diaphragm
-Pancreas

The Digestive System:

Digestive System

The digestive system a long system of organs and intestines that lead to digested food being broken down into nutrients and waste by physical and chemical means where the waste is then eventually removed from the body and the nutrients are transported to cells throughout the body. The digestion begins in the mouth where food is broken down by teeth and then is pushed down into the esophagus by the tongue which leads to the stomach.  In the stomach, the remnants of the food are then broken down more by physical and chemical components where it is then passed along into the small and then large intenstines finally being excreted out as physical waste.

Interacting with Other Systems:

Muscular System:

The tongue in the mouth is in itself a muscle as it pushes along broken down food into the esophagus. Throughout the rest of the system, muscles push along the waste and broken down food such as in the intestines.

Nervous System:

The brain relays messages through the nerves to command the muscles in the chewing of food, passing along the food in the esophagus and stomach, the digestion of the remnants, and the excretion of the physical waste through the  intestines and out.

Cardiovascular System:

The nutrients from the food that was digested are then passed through blood vessels and then transported throughout the body to cells by blood.

Excretory System:

While the digestive system filters out and excretes physcial waste, the excretory system filters out liquids and compounds which is then removed in a liquid substance called urine.

Failure Scenario:

Some diseases are responsible for the pain and may lead to more severe conditions primarily to the digestive system.

-Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as severe heartburn, is when the area between the stomach and esophagus contains a weakness which leads to stomach acid to regurgitate up into the esophagus causing irritation and inflamtion in the lining.

-Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is when small pouches called diverticula form in the lining of the colon due to weak spots. This leads to intense pain to the one being stricken with diverticulitis.

-Esophageal Varices

Esophageal varices are enlarged and bulging veins in the esophagus. These veins are fragile and prone to tear which may be fatal due to blood loss.
